SMALL GROUP ALASKA LAND TOUR.  Maximum 13 passengers traveling with 1 Alaska resident guide in one of our deluxe small coaches. Designated for travelers of age 16 and above.

 

DAILY ITINERARY: Your escorted vacation is spent fully discovering Alaska and meeting Alaskans. Trip days generally begin 8-9 am and end 8-9 pm, give or take an hour if the day warrants. Travel is at a comfortable pace with time out of the vehicle experiencing many things along the way. Custom and Optional activities can be arranged for an even more personal experience.. Travelers should be able to walk unassisted (at least a block and up a few stairs), and in good medical condition in order to participate in this small group tour. Times listed are approximate and if needed ATG may alter the schedule as needed to suit the situation. Our tours are meant to experience Alaska in a more personal way with more time away from the crowded larger coach destinations. We focus on showing you some of the real Alaska where you're one in 13 rather than one in 100 or 1000.

Day 1 - Arrival Day: - Anchorage, Alaska

Arrive Anchorage, Alaska. Explore Anchorage on your own as time allows. Downtown area hotel in walking distance to Anchorage attractions, shops, dining and activity. We're happy to assist with any information for individual plans this day. Overnight at the Clarion Suites downtown Anchorage. All two-room suites are elegantly furnished. The hotel offers a wide arrange of amenities, including: *Free hot breakfast buffet *Free Wi-Fi internet access *Free 24-hour airport shuttle service *Free Alaska Railroad shuttle service *Exercise room. Continental breakfast provided by hotel. 8:00 am meet and greet your Alaskan Tour guide in the hotel lobby, ready to begin your exciting adventure. Tour departs as a small group, in a comfortable executive shuttle and with an Alaska resident as your driver -guide. ATG guides provide first-hand experiences and knowledge from years of residency. Enjoy Alaskan hospitality with attention to detail and incredible memories to be long remembered. Drive time for the day: 5 hours

In route stop in Willow, Alaska the heart of mushing country to tour Dream a Dream kennels and meet the team of Vern Halter, a veteran Iditarod musher. Presentations weave the history of the Iditarod into an informative and interactive experience. Meet with the huskies who make up this incredible team of athletes. Take a short nature walk with the newest members, cute puppies abound! Then experience a ride on a multi-seat All Terrain Vehicle with the option of standing positions too. These dog limos are the coolest and most realistic way to ride with a sled dog team in the summer months. It’s great training for the dogs and you’ll see how they love it! End with lunch time to interact with mushers while enjoying delicious deli meats & cheeses, salad and dessert.

1-4 pm Continue travel north with short stops for sights. Our destination Denali Park, Alaska is nearby to the park entrance and visitor center. You’ll find the area outside, along the highway to be developed with visitor lodging and services. We explore as the group desires through easy hikes, information centers, shopping, dining or adding to the adventure with exciting activities.

OPTIONAL Early Evening: Denali activities can be reserved at added cost to include River Rafting adventures and ATV Wilderness tours - Added costs. Enjoy some adventure under the midnight sun!

Day 3: - Denali Optional and Custom Day

Today is an "Optional" day in Denali. This afternoon is to allow you to set the pace of your trip and pick what you'd like to do. Your guide will take care of transfers and arrangements as needed. Advance reservations are required for activities chosen.
No additional cost options include - short hikes, Denali park shuttle to Savage river for hike, shopping, relaxing at your lodge. Visit the Denali Visitor Center for displays and information including a variety of films. Shuttle transportation provided by hotel if ATG is unavailable.

Added cost options - ATV rides , Whitewater rafting, Scenic float trips. Rates and more information provided as interested. Multiple schedule times, shuttle transportation provided by hotel and activity outfitter if ATG is unavailable.

Dinner on your own tonight, we suggest your hotel restaurant or ATG can provide shuttle service up to 9 pm to nearby dining choices.

Spend your second night in the Grande Denali Lodge. (Meals included: Breakfast)

Day 4: - Denali National Park Shuttle to Eielson Visitor Center/ Optional evening excursions

7:45 am Depart for Denali Park entrance.

8:30 am to 4:30 pm Denali Park Shuttle to Eielson Visitor Center. Denali National Park and Preserve, located in Interior Alaska, centered on Denali (Mt. McKinley), the highest mountain in north America, encompasses more than 6 million acres and provides visitors with the experience of a lifetime. 92 miles long, the Denali Park Road parallels the Alaska Range and travels through low valleys and high mountain passes. It is the only road in the park. Along its route, beautiful landscapes can be seen at every turn, and there are to view Mt McKinley - if weather permits. Wildlife can often be seen, too, though sightings are not guaranteed - they are, after all, wild animals roaming an unfenced land. Opened in June 2008 the completely reconstructed Eielson Visitor Center was sustainably constructed and features interpretive exhibits. This is the turnaround point for your park trip, also a good place to hike and arrange a later bus back. This trip travels 65 miles one way, 8 hours round trip if you stay with the same bus. Your ATG guide will arrange for a boxed lunch for you to take along.

NOTE: Any travelers who wishes to book a different bus trip into Denali must do so prior to final tour payment date, with advance reservations. Any cost difference is the responsibility of the travelers and will be charged upon reservation.

Day 5: - Alaska Railroad Goldstar/ Talkeetna / Optional excursions

11:20 am check in to board The Denali Star, the Alaska Railroad's flagship train, from Denali to Talkeetna. On this route, sparkling salmon streams and stands of birch and spruce come into view, while carpets of fireweed add dramatic purple to the landscape. The train departs at 12:20 and your guide will drive with luggage and meet you in Denali at 4:40 pm Enjoy GoldStar Service, first-class service aboard double-deck dome cars, luxury rail travel has never been better. Reserved upper-leveldome car seating, upper-level outdoor viewing deck, exclusive lower-level dining room, lunch and beverages included. Two adult beverages included. Talkeetna, Alaska is a historical frontier town with lots of Alaskan flavor! The rustic and charming community is popular with visitors and offers a lot of hospitality with a choice of delicious eateries, quaint shops featuring local artists and even it’s quirky museums. There’s also a bit of adventure in the town if time or budget allows.

OPTIONAL: A Southside Explorer Flight with glacier landing: Fly over the lush green wetlands of the northern Boreal forest and transition into the ice age world of Mt. McKinley & the Alaska Range. Stunning snowcapped peaks, intense blue melt-water pools and cascading ice falls are beyond words. No other glacier that you stand on in Alaska places you right next to the greatest vertical relief on the planet. Flight & landing time: 1.5 hours (+30 minute pre check) Added costs.

Hotel: Located 2 miles from the historical town of Talkeetna and overlooking the Susitna River Valley, the Talkeetna Alaskan Lodge offers luxury accommodations, great dining and some of the most breathtaking views of Mount McKinley. Your Main Lodge room has a full bath, two queen beds, a hair dryer, coffee maker, small refrigerator, remote control television and telephone. Mountain side rooms upgrade: added costs. Day 6: - Spencer Glacier Discovery Float/ Girdwood, Alaska / Alyeska Resort

8:00 am Depart for travel south along the Seward Highway. Drive time for the day: 3.5 - 4 hours This National Scenic Byway passes through some of the most spectacular scenery in the country. The landscape varies from the muddy waters of Turnagain Arm to the icy blue glaciers that hang almost to the sea. Wildflowers and waterfalls brighten every corner of the road as it glides below rough mountains that pierce thick, heavy clouds. Only Alaska's Seward Highway can offer this particular mix created by climate, geography, and geology.

11:30 Lunch stop at Portage Lodge with tasty choices of homemade sandwiches and soups.

1 pm check in for The Glacier Discovery Train to the beautiful Spencer Glacier. Depart by train south along the Placer Valley leaving the highway behind and into wilderness. Disembark at the ultra-scenic Spencer Lake for an easy float amongst icebergs. The ice is so close you can touch it. Your guide navigates the raft in Alaska wilderness, down the Placer River for about 40 minutes to reconnect with the train. Class I (maybe II) rapids. 5:15 pm return to the rail depot for travel with your tour group and coach about 30 minutes to your next hotel. Girdwood lies in a valley in the Chugach Mountains near the end of the Turnagain Arm of Cook Inlet, 36 miles southeast of Anchorage proper. It is surrounded by seven permanent glaciers. Summer activities include hiking, fishing and rafting. Girdwood has the northernmost rain forest in the world.

Hotel: Located just 40 miles south of Anchorage along the scenic Seward Highway. The Hotel Alyeska is a Chateau style property located on Mount Alyeska's ski slopes. The 60 person aerial tram travels 2300 feet to the Glacier Express and Seven Glaciers restaurants atop Mount Alyeska. With 340 square feet these rooms are located on floors 4-7. These rooms offer panoramic Mountain or Valley views. There are some wheelchair accessible rooms in this category. Two Double Beds MEALS: B.

 

Day 7: - Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center / Exit Glacier Hike / Seward, Alaska

This is a leisure morning to enjoy the resort before departing in route to Seward. Drive time: 1 hour, 45 minutes. Depart the hotel around 10 am.

10:30 am In route stop to tour the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center is a non profit organization that cares for rescued wildlife, injured and orphans. They promote better awareness of Alaska Wildlife conservation methods through public education and they provide a fantastic opportunity to photograph Alaska wildlife up close. See moose, brown and black bear, wood bison, musk ox and many more rescued animals.

Entering into the town of Seward, we take a short drive along the Resurrection River toward Exit Glacier to observe the topography, vegetation and natural habitats surrounding a glacial environment. Walking routes vary from easy trails depicting the timeline of the retreating glacier to more moderate hiking trails leading up to the face of the glacier and great photo opportunities.

Seward, Alaska is a picturesque coastal community where the mountains melt into the seas. Resurrection Bay and Kenai Fjords National Park offer spectacular views of wildlife, glaciers and mountains. Stop by the harbor to see the returning fishing charters catch of the day, peruse the souvenir shops, or stroll along the bayfront.

Nestled in a spectacular glacier river valley, is the Seward Windsong Lodge. Guest rooms are spread out in a wooded setting, surrounded by spruce trees and wildflowers. Furnished and well-appointed with comfortable, Alaskan-style décor. From your rooms, wander the trails amidst the spruce and cottonwood forest. Rooms provide that genuine Alaskan feel inside and out. Day 8: - Kenai Fjords National Park Tour

10:30 am check in for Kenai Fjords National Park tour. Experience Alaska's most popular wildlife and glacier cruise! Kenai Fjords National Park boasts abundant wildlife, alpine and tidewater glaciers. This 6 hour tours depart from Seward, Alaska, and provides in-depth experience within pristine Kenai Fjords National Park. Observe sea lions, otters, possibly whales, and tidewater glaciers that calve into the sea .

Spend your second night at the Seward Windsong Lodge. (Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch)

 

Day 9: - Travel to Homer, Alaska/ Alaska Islands & Oceans Center / Wynn Nature Center

Enjoy a leisure morning and the hotel amenities before departing for travel down the Kenai Penisula to the end of the road and the town of Homer, Alaska. Travel along stretches of Scenic Byway with views of pristine wilderness rivers, glaciers, snow-capped mountains and massive volcanoes in route.

Depart at 11:00 am. Drive time between Girdwood and Homer: About 4 hours with stop in route for lunch time. (lunch cost not included) This quaint town nestled on the shore of Kachemak Bay offers breathtaking views of glaciers, mountains and wildlife. Homer is known to many as the 'Cosmic Hamlet by the Sea,' but it was made famous in Tom Bodett's tales as 'The End of the Road.' This beautiful destination offers a variety of activities.

The Islands & Ocean Visitor Center is your window to the largest seabird refuge in the world, with all of the wonders of Kachemak Bay right outside its doors! The center takes you on a dramatic journey through the refuge's past and present . . . surrounds you with the sights, sounds - and even the smells of a seabird colony . . . and invites you to follow biologists as their research ship sails to remote islands each year.

The Wynn Nature Center is well-known for abundant beautiful wildflowers. Signs of wildlife can be seen on the trails throughout the year. The diverse upland habitats support several different plant communities. A hike at Wynn Nature Center provides an interesting comparison with a hike through the northern edge of the coastal forest on the Peterson Bay Field Station trail system. The Wynn Nature Center is one of the "birding hot spots" in the Homer area for forest and upland birds.

Hotel: Land’s End hotel. A preferred room with a with view of Kachemak Bay. Full bath. King or two beds. On the water, at the very tip of the Homer Spit, surrounded by a natural Paradise. Land’s End is the only hotel on the Homer Spit -- and within walking distance of the small boat harbor. MEALS: B

Day 10: Thursday, August 3, 2018 - Homer, Alaska - CUSTOM DAY to customize your vacation with many choices: Added cost items - Fishing charters, Bear viewing, Sea Kayaking, Seldovia tours, Wildlife cruises and more.

ATG works with individuals to customize the tour for your interests today.

Leisure and free activities include shopping the spit, throwing a line in the “fishing hole”, walking the beaches. Low cost activities are guide hikes, and bike rentals.

Day 11: - Return Travel to Anchorage / Portage Valley - Begich, Boggs Visitor Center / End of Escort

8:30 am Group breakfast at a local diner. 9:30 am Depart for travel returning north along the Kenai Penisula to Anchorage, Alaska along stretches of Scenic Byway with views of pristine wilderness rivers, glaciers, snowcapped mountains and massive volcanoes in route. Drive time for the day: About 4 hours Continue travel north along the Seward Highway, with short stops for last minute highlights.

Portage Valley stop at the Begich, Boggs Visitor Center. The center was built upon the terminal moraine left behind by Portage Glacier in 1914. The visitor center offers a unique opportunity to learn about the Chugach National Forest, America's second largest national forest. Award-winning exhibits and presentations highlight the unique features of the region.

Your escorted portion of this tour concludes in Anchorage with drop off and check in to your Anchorage hotel.
