Originally called "Glacier City," Girdwood was founded as a supply camp for placer gold miners with claims along the creeks feeding Turnagain Arm. The one-lane tunnel must be shared by cars and trains traveling in both directions, and it usually needs to be aired out in between trips (with jet turbine ventilation, another first!). This unique design that enables a single lane of traffic to travel directly over the railroad track saved tens of millions of dollars over the cost of constructing a new tunnel. The other side of the tunnel is Whittier and the gateway to Prince William Sound

On the 26 Glacier Cruise, you'll see several types of glaciers, including Alpine (hanging), Piedmont and Tidewater. Glacier calvings (when broken pieces of ice fall into the water and become icebergs) are normally seen on each cruise. Cruises are narrated by a Chugach National Forest Service Ranger to provide an insider’s view of this area and the natural history of the area. Enjoy a complimentary hot lunch! Comfortable upholstered booths with tables are available for all passengers and the large picture windows provide a view from every seat.
